Abstract Sounds

Abstract Sounds, a Cleveland-based alternative jazz fusion ensemble formed in 2021, leans firmly into the second approach. Led by saxophonist Jevaughn Bogard—whose performance background includes work with artists such as Chick Corea and Donald Harrison—the group brings together jazz, funk, gospel, and soul into a sound built on groove and momentum. Their lineup has expanded into a six-piece configuration, often featuring a strong horn section alongside rhythm players, with core members including Bogard, trumpeter Frank Walton, drummer Ashton Thomas, and bassist Aaron Grayer. Their sound centers on what they describe as bringing a “dance element back to jazz”—music shaped by deep harmony, layered arrangements, and rhythms that invite movement. Influences from artists like Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, and Snarky Puppy come through in the balance between structure and groove. Sets typically include original compositions alongside arranged covers, giving the band space to reinterpret familiar material while developing their own voice.
